Last Night on Earth was released just as the Popmart tour was starting to find its stride. The track was reworked for the single release. U2 had commented several times that Pop felt unfinished, this was corrected somewhat in the single versions of tracks rerecorded in the midst of the tour. Last Night on Earth was the first track to be reworked.
This single also included a cover reworking of the Beatles song "Happiness is a Warm Gun". The track was originally recorded for the soundtrack of an ABC television show simply titled, "Gun", but this single saw a release of that track. Another cover made it to this single as well, a cover of M's "Pop Muzik". This song was used to start each Popmart show on the tour, and played over the PA system of the stadium while U2 made their entrance. Rounding out the songs released on this single was Numb (The Soul Assassins Mix) which had previously been released on 1995's fan club only CD Melon.
